Thousands of people in My Tho town in Cao Lanh district in the southern province of Dong Thap (Mekong delta) have been reportedly cleaned out from online money trading deals.

It is estimated that several thousands of local residents have suffered losses from online money trading deals in the ring managed by a couple of doctors, Nguyen Trung Quang and Le Thi Mong Thu, in Cao Lanh district in Dong Thap province.

Spending real money to buy virtual money

Ho Thi Anh Loan in Tan Thuan Dong commune in Cao Lanh city related that she injected $100 in the business network called ‘ColonyInvest’. However, she has been able to get neither principal nor interest.

“I had no money to make the investment, but the broker said he could lend me $100 so that I could open an account. Mrs Chin Trung and Ba also mortgaged land to borrow money to make investment in the business network. As a result, we have become penniless,” she related.

Mrs Loan and her neighbours had to go to public Internet access points to make the investment deals. “I could see a westerner on the website, and I could see my name, then I injected money in,” a victim of the money trading ring said.

According to Do Van Hanh, Deputy Chairman of the Tan Thuan Dong’s People’s Committee, nearly half of the local residents that joined the business network were ones listed among hunger and poverty subjects. Many of them had to borrow money from credit funds to join the business network.

Nguyen Van Dao, 50, related that he got a couple of cows with money borrowed from the programme on hunger elimination and poverty eradication. As nurturing a dream of getting fat profit from online money trading, he sold the couple of cows for $400 and injected $500 in the network (plus $100 of savings). His daughter has also made a deposit of $500 to the network, and all the $1,000 has vanished into the air.

Le Thi Tuyet Van, who has a child with polio, related that she and her husband injected all $300 they had earned over the previous 10 years in the business network. The sum of money was previously planned for hospital treatment for their child, and now they have no money for this any more.

The tears of farmers

The promised big profit of online money trading has prompted poor farmers, many of whom do not even know exactly the names of the locations where they live, to inject thousands of dollars in virtual accounts and make capital contributions to institutions they have never heard of.

Bui Van Luy, a disabled person in Hoa An commune, Cho Moi district in An Giang province also borrowed money to make investment in a virtual network. The man has not got any interest so far, and what he has received is the promise that he will get interest soon.

Nguyen Trung Quang, the head of the online money trading ring, showed receipts to VietNamNet reporters, on which the investors-farmers wrote: “I have joined Colony group voluntarily, and I will not make claim in case of risks”.

Having no money, the poor farmers still have to live, in a bid to earn money back, and work hard to get money for debt payment.
