In Vietnam's southern Can Tho city, the sight of little kids lugging heavy, oversized backpacks to school is common.
“My backpack is so heavy,” complains seven-year-old Le Hoang Dieu from Le Binh 2 Primary School in Cai Rang District.
Dieu says it takes him 20 minutes to walk to school every day, and he has to stop to rest every few minutes because his large pack weighs so much.
According to many parents in Can Tho, their small children have to shoulder three to five kilograms of books to school every day often causing stress, pain and fatigue to their small frames.
“I can't bear seeing my child lug that heavy bag to school,” says the mother, so her solution is to walk her child to school every day so she can help carry the load.
Other parents opt for another alternative: buying rolling back-packs with wheels for their children.
At Le Quy Don Primary school in Ninh Kieu District, most students walk to school pulling their rolling backpacks behind them.
School officials say they are aware of the problem.
Nguyen Van Sau, Principal of Tran Quoc Toan Primary says his school tries to help ease the knapsack load by installing shelves inside classrooms for students to put their belongings on rather than having to carry them back and forth from home.
